BLE Starter
Licence-free BLE starter kit for Flutter apps

Ship your BLE app without paying for a Bluetooth library licence.

BLE Starter is a production-ready starter kit built only on free open-source libraries (BSD and MIT licences): scanning, reconnects, OTA firmware updates and tests, for iOS and Android from one codebase. Pay once, ship unlimited apps.

01 — Why now

The most-used Flutter BLE library now costs a small startup $2,999.

Since version 2.0, flutter_blue_plus needs a paid commercial licence for every for-profit organisation, including while you develop and test. It's one licence per company, priced by headcount.

BLE Starter runs on universal_ble and flutter_reactive_ble, both BSD-licensed. There's no library licence to buy at any company size, and every release ships with a licence report you can hand to investors.

Prefer to build it yourself? Those libraries are free to use directly. BLE Starter is the production layer you'd otherwise spend weeks building on top of them.

02 — The alternative

Or spend the next few weeks on BLE plumbing.

  • Android 12+ and iOS permissions that fail silently
  • A scanner with filters that doesn't drain the battery
  • A connection state machine with auto-reconnect and backoff
  • Tracking down status 133, 8 and 19 disconnects
  • MTU negotiation and chunked writes for large payloads
  • OTA firmware updates with progress and recovery
  • Keeping several devices connected at once
  • Mocks and tests so you can ship without hardware on every desk
  • Checking every dependency's licence before you ship
03 — What's inside

The BLE layer of a production app, already working together.

Every module is plain Flutter code you own and can change, organised the way you'd build it for a client.

01

Permissions & adapter state

Android 12+ and iOS permission flows, with ready-made denied and Bluetooth-off screens.

02

Scanner

Filter by service UUID, name and signal strength, with battery-aware scan modes.

03

Connection manager

A state machine with auto-reconnect, exponential backoff, timeouts and status-133 handling.

04

GATT data layer

Typed read, write and notify, MTU negotiation and chunked writes for big payloads.

05

Multiple devices

A device registry that keeps several connections alive and in sync with your UI.

06

OTA firmware updates

ESP32 updates over BLE with a progress screen, plus the matching ESP32 firmware sketch.

07

Never locked into one Bluetooth library

Your app talks to the kit, not to a library. It runs on universal_ble, with flutter_reactive_ble built in as a backup. If either one changes its licence or stops being maintained, you switch without rewriting your app.

08

Tests & diagnostics

A mock adapter, unit tests, and an in-app log viewer you can export from a customer's phone.

09

Licence report

Every dependency and its licence, regenerated with each release, ready for due diligence.

04 — How it works

From clone to your own hardware in three steps.

Get the repoPrivate GitHub access on release day, with docs and a setup video.
  2. 2
Point it at your hardwareAdd your service and characteristic UUIDs to one config file. Scanning, connections and data pick them up.
  3. 3
Build your product, not the plumbingSpend your time on the features your users pay for. Pay once and reuse the kit in every app you make.
05 — Who it's for

Built for teams shipping real hardware.

Hardware founders and CTOs

Ship the companion app without a library licence or a BLE specialist on the payroll.

Agencies and freelancers

Reuse one tested BLE foundation across every client project. Client work is included.

Flutter developers new to BLE

Start from code that already handles the hard parts, not a tutorial that stops at "connected".

Not for you if you only write firmware with no Flutter app, or you want a no-code builder.

06 — Who built it

Built by Sahil Bora, a BLE app consultant.

I build the apps and firmware behind hardware products. Over six years I've shipped production apps for automotive, IoT, smart lighting, eFoil and home-automation products, including BLE apps that hold 4–8 connections at once, and I've consulted on BLE projects since 2023.

BLE Starter turns the patterns from that work into code you can drop into your own app.

08 — Questions

Frequently asked

Is it really licence-free?

Its BLE engines, universal_ble and flutter_reactive_ble, are BSD-3-Clause licensed, which allows commercial use with no fees. Every release includes a licence report listing each dependency. This isn't legal advice, so check the report against how you'll use it.

Why not just use universal_ble directly?

You can, and it's free. BLE Starter is everything you'd build on top of it: permissions, reconnects, OTA, multiple devices, tests and docs, already working together.

Will it work with my hardware?

Scanning, connections and data work with any standard BLE peripheral over GATT. The OTA module targets ESP32.

Can I use it for client work?

Yes. Pro covers unlimited projects, including client work. You can't resell the kit or build a competing starter kit from it.

Can't AI tools write this for me?

They'll write BLE code that compiles. It tends to break on Android and iOS quirks, status-133 disconnects, reconnects and firmware updates, and those are the parts this kit is built and tested for.

Can I get a refund?

Once you have the source code, it's yours to keep, so there are no refunds for change of mind. Unsure whether it suits your hardware? Email me before you buy.
